I felt the agony of defeat from the blows from my enemies. I felt the emotional abandonment
when friends walked away in the heat of the skirmish. I felt the weight of helplessness at not being
able to stop my enemies’ attacks. I felt the shame of my defenseless and fearful state of mind.
Defeated, frustrated, confused, broken, and torn, I was quickly moving toward a resolve to give
up. I did not see how this was going to end, and I had grown tired of looking. I was at the end of
myself. The fight in me was gone. My hope was drying up. In addition, my faith was failing me.

Ironically, it was also at this point in my life that I felt as though I could see God more clearly than
I have ever seen him before. Gone was the facade of grandeur, gone was false humility, and gone
was self-importance and pride. It was now gone…all gone, and I was left with nothing tangible but
my nakedness. Therefore, my new pursuit was for him and him alone. I was drawn to his Word
like never before and found my wellspring of life in 2 Chronicles 20:17, “But you will not even
need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the LORD’s victory.”

These words literally set my captive heart free! In the midst of the most horrific challenge of my
life, I only had to do three things:

1. Position myself
2. Stand still
3. Watch the Lord’s victory

My response—I positioned myself in prayer. I learned what the Scriptures truly meant when it
admonished us to “pray without ceasing.” I stood still. I stopped feeling as though I needed to take
matters into my own hands. I even stopped complaining about my enemies’ activities. Rather I
became very thankful for their activity in my life because every attack opened the door for God to
pour out his blessings on my life. Then, and only then did I begin to see the Lord’s victory. I found
myself at a place of really understanding the victory that has been ours for over two thousand
years. I experienced his sovereignty in a way that set everything in me at peace. I encountered
God…and since that day, my life has never been the same.

If you have ever felt or if you feel compelled at this very moment to fight your own battles, let me
encourage you…Don’t! God is bigger than anything you will ever face and he is always moving on
your behalf.

Think About It: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue
that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication
from me, declares the LORD.” —Isaiah 54:17 (NIV)

Last Word: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the
heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12

Have you ever experienced a time when it
felt like you were facing the battle of your
life? Did you feel as though your enemies
surrounded you and the barrage of attacks
were unyielding? Did you think to yourself,
“This is it! There is no way I can win in this
situation?” I sure have! In fact, an
experience such as this changed my life and
relationship with God forever. It was as if one
day I went to sleep and the next day, all hell
had broken loose in my life. The onslaught
came in such a way (to use my grandmother’s
terminology) that “I didn’t know if I was
coming or going.”

Naturally, or should I say instinctively, my
first response was to retreat and run for
cover. My next thought was to retaliate and
fight back with all my might. Lastly, I
thought, “I’ve got to get out of here…I need a
one-way ticket to anywhere…just not here!”
