Though Lecrae's beats thump and he shares knowledge of the Bible in his clever verses, the
GRAMMY-nominated Christian rapper and co-founder of Reach Records is not a "Bible
thumper." It is not his goal to shove his belief system down the throats of those who have no
interest in his message of Jesus Christ. Lecrae simply shares truth and whosoever will, comes.
And they are coming in droves, drawn to the skill, authenticity, and life-changing message being
delivered by the urban missionary. And although EEW Magazine has placed him on this year's
"10 Men Leading the Way" list, for him, it is not about accolades or personal praise. But this man
is on a mission. Recently, he tweeted, "The more we esteem people the more critical we are of
them. People will ALWAYS disappoint you. Put your stock in God."
Clearly, he wants to keep the eyes of his growing base on God, not him, or any other fallible
leader for that matter.
If Lecrae had it his way, he likely wouldn't even be mentioned on EEW's "10 Men" list. But no
Christian Hip Hop list would be complete without one of the most recognizable names and faces
in the Christian Hip Hop movement. With no compromise, just a clear message, coupled with
quality, and consistency, Reach Records co-founder and GRAMMY-nominated rapper Lecrae,
is showing a biblical picture of manhood to a lost and dying generation.
I had the privilege of interviewing him a while back (Read his feature here), and was struck by
his strategic approach to the urban movement. Lecrae, who recently launched the "Man Up"
campaign, is intent on reshaping the perception of what it really means to be a man--something
that has been distorted by destructive images and warped philosophies posing as truth.
On the Man Up campaign site, the movement is explained this way:
"In partnership with ReachLife Ministries and Reach Records, Man Up is a new campaign,
calling men in the hip-hop culture to true biblical manhood through repentance and faith
in Christ. The campaign consists of a short film, small group curriculum, music
soundtrack and concert series. It is our call for men in urban culture to repent for their
failure to become the men that God has created them to be and for believers to live as who
they truly are in Christ."
The new Man Up Anthem featuring Lecrae, KB, Trip Lee, Tedashii, Sho Baraka, PRo & Andy
Mineo, is available for purchase on iTunes.
