exposing yourself to these patterns of thinking and behavior that go against God’s standards,
will eventually taint you.
As a woman who loves the Lord, what looks appealing to the world should not appeal to you in
the same way. Of course that does not mean you don’t have desires, or that you are never
tempted. Every person on earth is tempted with one thing or another, but still, you are not like
the characters on that show. You are not the same woman you were before. Now that you are
changed by the blood of Jesus Christ, you no longer believe it is okay to engage in premarital
sex. You don’t degrade yourself by hooking up with men solely on the basis of the amount of
material things you can acquire from the relationship.
Even the cussing and profanity on the show should make you bristle. If you had a “potty mouth”
before God saved you, now that you belong to Him, the way you speak has changed.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made in Christ; a Godly woman; a virtuous woman. You
aren’t a loose woman who is desperate to be with a man. So why indulge in a show that
encourages and embraces a lifestyle counter to your beliefs, mentality, and reality?
I know many people will say, “It’s not that serious Kennisha. It’s just a show.” But if something
consistently glorifies sin and causes you to think thoughts that will weaken you as a single
woman, it becomes more than just a show. It then acts as a vehicle the enemy uses to plant
unwholesome thoughts in your mind, thus intensifying the struggle to keep your flesh under
subjection. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 says we should guard our hearts with all diligence (NASB).
Whether you know it or not, the things you watch can have a lasting influence on your life. So,
it’s more than just a show. It’s a seed that will produce a harvest.
And since VH1’s Single Ladies showcases and trivializes promiscuity, obscenity and
manipulating behavior with men, as a woman after God’s heart, this is an inappropriate choice of
entertainment. Let’s face it. You have nothing in common with these characters as you wait on
the Lord for a relationship with a man who loves the Lord, respects you and your holy standards
of living.

There are few things that immediately struck
my attention as I watched VH1’s Single Ladies
(while grinding my teeth!). The show
unashamedly promotes promiscuity and
manipulation; presents a skewed view of what
should be considered “desirable” in a mate; and
uses profanity like it’s okay.
If you have seen the show, I’m sure you have
already noticed a lot of focus placed on sex.
Fornication is characterized as a way of life with
no condemnation or shame attached to it.
Ladies, I want to caution you when it comes to
delving into these type shows; constantly

Case and point, Single Ladies scored 1.8 million viewers in the coveted 18-45 demographic for its
opening episode — a record for the VH1 network. On top of that, the successful Queen Latifah-
produced show will very likely be renewed for another season.
So love it or hate it, Single Ladies, which was just renewed for a second season, will be around for a
while.
And according to the many Facebook messages that stream through my time line, programming
focusing on black women and their relationships has sucked in plenty of individuals in my personal
social networking circles. From Basketball Wives to previous episodes of The Game and the Real
Housewives series, it seems women are finding their on-screen drama fix with ease.
As a relationship columnist, though I’m not an avid television watcher, I feel I still need to have
some understanding of what it is that makes Single Ladies entertaining for millions of women.
That’s why I recently tuned in for one episode—the first and last I’ll be watching. Even though I
had a pretty good idea of what I would get from a secular show geared toward modern singles, I
tried to give the series the benefit of the doubt. “Perhaps I’ll find some redeeming qualities that
would make the show okay,” I rationalized. But ladies, I have to be honest. Even with an open
mind, the show ended up being an #FAIL to me.
Make that an #EPICFAIL.
The positive, healthy perspective was pretty much absent.
I’m sure some of you reading this article will be silently asking, “What else would you expect
coming from VH1?” To that I say, good point. There is a certain level of immorality and depravity
that comes along with a worldly perspective on relationships, which is why I need to address this
series that has pulled in lots of Christian women, too.

An EEW Magazine reader and subscriber to
my website, who happens to be a viewer of
VH1’s scripted dramedy, Single Ladies,
wrote a message to me about the show. She
said Single Ladies, “doesn’t show the full
scope of the single woman and is not
providing healthy examples. And so all of us
single ladies here in Atlanta will get painted
with a broad stroke because of it.”
Clearly, there are women out there who are
as disgusted and offended by the depictions
of single women I am. And this outrage spans
a lot farther than just the booming city of
Atlanta. There are groups of intelligent,
classy, level-headed women everywhere who
are turned off—especially Christian single
ladies.
Even with some not-so-favorable reviews,
however, shows like VH1’s Single Ladies
prove to be ratings bonanzas.
