opened  up to me about his less known,
“softer” side, his hidden talents, as well as his
own philosophy on fatherhood, single
motherhood, raising happy daughters, and
why young women need their fathers just as
much—if not more—than male children.

The Unveiling of the “Hidden Talents”

Dr. Myles Munroe’s home is overseas in the
Bahamas, thus, much of his history and
background is unknown to those of us in the
States. But there’s much more to him than
just preaching, teaching, and writing books….

DH: I was on your Myspace page and saw a
video of one of the songs you’ve written. I
didn’t know you wrote music.

MM: Oh no! You’ve found me out. I’m
busted. (Laughing) I’ve been in music for
about thirty years

DH: Wow.

MM: Absolutely, I’ve done everything. I’ve
produced records. I’ve done a lot of work.

DH: Can you sing Dr. Munroe?

MM: (Chuckles) Oh, it’s been a while. Let’s
just say… let’s just say, I’ve done good enough
for my songs to have made it to the top.

DH: I’ve heard the beautiful song you wrote
called “Brand New World.” I actually watched
the video. The lyrics, the melody… all of it is
so beautiful. My favorite part is the main
chorus that says: “If you want a brand new
world, you’ve gotta have a brand new people;
if you want a brand new people you’ve gotta
have a brand new life; if you want a brand new
life, you gotta have a brand new spirit; and if
you want a brand new spirit, you’ve gotta
come to Jesus Christ." So what inspired you
to write that?

MM: I must’ve done a good job, you
remembered the words.

DH: You know, I have been singing it…
(laughing)

MM: Really?

DH: Yes.

MM: Oh, I’m so proud, I tell you; you make
me feel so encouraged. Thank you so much. I
wrote that song in 19…1970 . It has been
recorded by many groups. I have a number of
songs that have been well-received by the
market and also through different
generations.

DH: So you were a singer, a musician, and
entertainer before you began doing what
you’re doing now?

MM: Yes, I began in music. My speaking
came afterward.

DH: So take me back there. How did that
happen? How did the speaking come from the
music?
MM: (Chuckles) Well, actually I was, uh, I
started playing piano at age five. I walked up
to the piano one day and started playing.

DH: Just like that?

MM: It was natural, yeah. I’ve just got a
natural musical ear. My mother prayed for
me, uh, my mother had eleven children and
she was a very committed Christian and she
used to have—her and my father were always
very, very, evangelistic in their outreach, and
uh, she used to have what they called
children’s meetings at that time, way back in
the 1960’s, and she used to gather on Friday
evenings all the little children from around
the neighborhood.

We were born in a very low income area, and
she would bring all these kids into our yard
and she would teach them Bible stories and
then we had a kind of old abandoned shop
that was available to us on our property back
there, and we met in that little wooden shop
and all these kids were there. And I was
among them. I was just one of the children--5,
6 year olds-- and there was an old broken
down grand piano—no, an upright piano in
there. And we’d be singing and uh, my
mother, I heard her verbally say, “Lord
please send me someone to play the piano for
these kids so the kids can sing with music,”
because we were not—we could not afford to
go to music lessons. We were too poor. So
one day she laid hands on me and she said
“Father I pray that one of my children will be
able to play music so we can enjoy music with
these children.” And she touched me and
prayed for me. And a few years later, I didn’t
know what was going on. I was a kid and I
didn’t think it was no big deal. I walked up to
the piano, and I was playing with the piano…
playing with it like kids. And I found myself
hitting the key, and I knew what the next key
was before I hit it. There was a sound in my
head. I didn’t know at the time that this is
what they called musical ears.

DH: That’s amazing.

MM: I was able to tell the next sound before I
played it. I walked to the piano and I started
playing with it, and all of a sudden I started
playing. I started playing chords, and then I
knew what the next chord would be, and at
age 5, I started holding chords and knew what
to do, and I started playing for those kids. So
I was a child playing for children. And the rest
is history, you know, I became very efficient
with music and they called me a genius I
guess.

DH: I can believe that.

MM: Anything I heard once I could play it.

DH: Really?

MM: Yes, and I’m still that way today.

DH: That’s impressive.
MM: And so, eventually, when I became a
teenager, my mother sent me for piano
lessons and I had difficulty with the music
teacher because, you know, she’d play
something through for me once and I’d just
play it and wasn’t reading the notes ‘cause I
knew how it sounded. So she would punish me
for not reading notes. And uh, so I ended up,
passing my first, second, and third grade in
piano. And I started to write songs when I was
fourteen years old. And by the time I was
fifteen I formed a group of young teenage
boys—myself—I was around the same age,
fifteen/sixteen… we started a group. We were
all young Christians, just teenagers. We were
very serious about God at age fifteen, very
serious about God. We were fasting and
reading the Bible, and everything, and we
started writing our music and we… we wrote
what we called Contemporary Christian
Music at that time. Of course the whole
church in the country, all the churches turned
against us because they called that “devil
music.”

DH: (Laughing) I bet.

MM: Yeah, so, “Brand New World” in 1970
would definitely be demonic music. Because
back then they were singing things like uh,
“Blessed assurance Jesus is mine…” (Singing
in slow, droning voice)… them old dead songs
(Laughing) So, we were teenagers… we wanted
to play hip music, but uh, we couldn’t find hip
music in the church, so we wrote our own
songs. I wrote about 90% of the songs that we
sang.

DH:  I know that you’re also very artistic Dr.
Munroe. Just so we get it all out there, what
are your hidden talents? You know… the
things that most of us in the States don’t
know?

MM: Well, I also do sculptures and painting,
watercolors, oil colors, acrylic colors. I paint
portraits, landscape. A number of my
paintings actually are in various people’s
homes both in the United States and in the
Bahamas, and uh, so when I have time I also
paint. I love it. One of my degrees eventually
came in Fine Arts… and so music, and
painting.
