Tamela Mann Exclusive
EEW: You and David will be celebrating 20 years this April. What
is it like being married to one of the funniest men in America?

Tamela: It’s a lot of fun. Of course, I can never stay mad at him
because he makes me laugh. He really makes me laugh.
Honestly, he can make me mad [too]. But like I told him, you
can make me the maddest, and you can also make me the
happiest. He’s so mellow. He’s just a loveable guy, and he takes
care of me so that I can’t help but just be in love with him.
Whatever I ask for, David goes out of his way to get it. At the
beginning of the year, he said, Tam, whatever you want, the
desire to give it to you overtakes me. He said if it’s a passion for
you, I want to make it happen.

EEW: Oh, that's so sweet. So, how do you stay humble with all of
the good things that are happening in your life and your career?

Tamela: I never want to get to the point where I feel like I’ve
got it together and that I can just go out there and just rock the
house. I pray, Lord, even if it’s theater, or if I’m going out to
minister in song, you go before me. I’m just your instrument.
I’m just the clay. He’s the potter. So, He’s just molding me into
what He wants me to be. And this right here, what happened on
Meet the Browns is just icing on the cake—something I didn’t
even ask God for. He says that if our ways please Him that He’ll
give us the desires of our heart.
EEW: What do you say to encourage the women reading this
article in EEW Magazine that feel discouraged?

Tamela: A lot of us have gone through the same things. We
might have a different twist on our story but we’ve all been
through a lot. But you can do it. I don’t care what it is. All
things are possible if we just believe.

EEW: What’s next for you Tamela?

Tamela: Right now, the sitcom is the next thing, the Meet the
Browns sitcom is coming up. And also, David and I are
working on a project together. Also, I have an album in stores,
Tamela Mann, the Live Experience.  You can get it from my

EEW: You're surrounded by powerful men. Kirk Franklin, Tyler
Perry, and David Mann are all giants in the industry. What is it
like being connected to all of them, and seeing what God is doing
in their lives?

Tamela: (Sighs and pauses)… we never could’ve made it… I
don’t know. (Laughs) I’m lost for words on that one. (Pauses
again) It’s just that we never would’ve ‘thunk’ it if I can say it
like that. We never would’ve dreamed that God would do all
He’s done because, you know, back when I got out of High
school—I graduated a year before David—him, Kirk, and
Darryl Blair—we all started singing together back then. At
that time, we were just sitting around, looking at each other,
laughing and talking, you know. Kirk was doing his own thing
back then and we were doing our own thing. But now Darrell
is pastoring and he’s our pastor. And we’re just like man… we
just never would’ve dreamed of God doing what he’s done.
(Pauses) You’re just making my eyes well up. God just keeps
on amazing me. Man, he just keeps on amazing me. It just goes
on and on and on, and I’m like Lord, I’m gone just keep serving
you, loving you, because these things that He promised me,
He’s doing it. Even with the beginning, all the suffering, I
wouldn’t trade any of it, because God has just been so faithful.
He’s been so faithful to us.

EEW: It was a long road to success. Did you ever think your
dream would never happen?

Tamela: Of course, yeah, I felt like it wasn’t going to happen.
I mean, after being in the background so long, I was content
with it. But now, I’m hoping that I can help somebody else get
over that fear [of being out front and acceptance] of just being
in the back, so they can have enough faith in themselves to
stand out front in the forefront.
"Tyler saw
something in
me I didn't
see in myself."
Tyler said, Tam you’re going to do this role so, David get her
ready. That’s exactly how he said it. David get her ready.
(Laughing, mimicking Tyler Perry) And I had the script
already so he just said learn this part. I didn’t really have the
opportunity to say yes or no. It was quite a little bit more
money, but I was still like, oh my God!

EEW: So you weren't originally cast as Aunt Cora?

Tamela: No, I was playing Brown’s wife at first until the guy
left that was playing the uncle in all of the plays, so I was
switched to the role of Aunt Cora, which is Madea’s daughter.

EEW: I see, so how did you get over being so scared?

Tamela: By me going over and over [my lines] and talking in
front of the audience, I built up courage to stand in front of
people and talk and that really helped me even with singing and
opening my eyes, because I learned how to respond to the
audience better.

EEW: How did you prepare for your theater role?

Tamela: David helped coach me, and my daughter would be
going over lines with me too. And then, David would just be
chattering and saying stuff in the background. I was like, why
are you doing that David? Why are you doing that?! You know
I’m trying to learn these lines! He said, Tam, you know people
are going to be talking to you from the audience. You know how
our audiences do. They talk to you! (Laughing) So I just kept
going over and over and over and over [the script]. And one
thing that also helped me [that I learned] from Tyler is, he said,
if you’re acting, it’s wrong. He said take yourself to a natural
place. So whatever I do I just go to a natural place. And
honestly, Cora is just me in the natural without my name.
Basically, I’m just getting to play me. It just comes from a real
place. Whatever it is [I'm doing] I can’t be nobody but me.
EEW: Now, it's very
well-documented that you didn't
want to do the acting thing. So,
how did Tyler Perry convince you?

Tamela: The opportunity came
when somebody had to leave and
I ended up getting this part.
