But before experiencing her whirlwind success, few people knew that underneath the
confident façade, she felt inadequate and inept. “One day, I was looking at all these speakers
and authors, and in my mind they had something I didn’t have. For some reason, I put other
people on a pedestal like they had a magic formula that I just didn’t have access to, no matter
what… and it was like God was saying, Why not you Valorie? You have what it takes too.
They don’t have some magic formula. A lot of them started with less than you started with.
So, use what you’ve got and move ahead.”
Just a year ago, Valorie released a book called, Why Not You? 28 Days to Authentic
Confidence, based on the insecurities and doubts that God gave her the strength to overcome.
But before breaking free, she needed to identify the origin of her feelings of inferiority.
Interestingly, the root of the problem dated back to a time when Valorie was only a teenager.
“When I was 17, I went to the Air Force Academy and ended up on academic probation. I left
feeling dumb, and decided I was going to prove to the world—though nobody was paying
attention but me—that I was still smart.”
Thus, a vicious cycle of over-achievement and busyness began.
By the age of 20, Valorie had already earned her Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs
with a Minor in Sociology. Then, at age 21, she went on to gain her Master’s Degree in
Journalism from Florida A & M in one year—surpassing all her peers.
For Valorie, her fear of somehow not being smart enough or good enough caused her to push
herself to achieve more in less time. Consequently, she constantly overdid it, severely
reducing her quality of life. “It was fear that drove me to such a high level of busyness. It was
the fear that I wasn’t smart enough… it was ridiculous, but it was my fear.”
Unfortunately, there is an epidemic where many individuals become so bogged down with
trying to make things happen in their lives that they end up out of balance. “We have this
illusion that we are in control of things that we are not in control of. The Lord will bring the
right opportunities to you. You don’t have to be frazzled trying to make things happen. You
have to have faith. It’s up to you to make a decision about whether you’re going to be a living
embodiment of faith or fear.”
Valorie made her choice. She chose faith. Now, she has relinquished control and allowed God
to bring the right opportunities to her, in His own timing. As a result of this paradigm shift,
Valorie is truly living in alignment with God’s will. “There’s nothing better and nothing more
fulfilling than doing what you were called to do,” Valorie says.
Perhaps you’re struggling to live a life of purpose, balance, and fulfillment. You may not know
what to do or where to begin; if this describes you, then Valorie Burton’s, How Did I Get So
Busy? can indeed help you change your life.
