Seven years ago, before stepping into her
divine assignment, Valorie Burton, Author of
How Did I Get So Busy? The 28-day Plan to
Free Your Time, Reclaim Your Schedule, and
Reconnect with What Matters Most, was
over-extending herself in an effort to stay
ahead of the curve. She poured her heart and
soul into building her own successful PR Firm,
The Burton Agency.
Those who looked from the outside in saw a successful entrepreneur living the good life. She was
beautiful, young, smart, driven, focused, and happy… or so it seemed. Valorie appeared to have it
all, but deep inside her soul she knew she wasn’t living her purpose.
“I had written my first book,” recalls Valorie. “And after I had self-published it, I had gotten a deal
from Random House for that particular book, so I got a taste of living my purpose and being able
to do what I really loved.”
She craved the liberty and freedom to do what God had anointed and chosen her to do.
But at the time she was stuck in a cycle of focusing on the thing that provided the most security,
even if it meant investing most of her time and energy into something she no longer loved.
Then, one November morning in 2000 as she prepared herself for a 9:00AM client meeting,
Valorie broke down while standing in the shower. Tears streamed down her face and her whole
body ached in frustration. She tried to compose herself, but couldn’t.
Valorie knew she’d had enough.
But what would everyone think? She had been named one of the nation’s 30 rising stars in public
relations by PR Week Magazine that year.
Furthermore, how could she walk away from a robust client list, a steady stream of income, and
the secure lifestyle she had grown accustomed to?
“I had probably gone about six weeks where I didn’t sleep through the entire night,” Valorie tells
EEW. “My spirit was really restless. I got up that morning and I didn’t feel like going to work and
you know, work wasn’t a job, work was my company! I had been trying to figure out how I could
grow the business so I could eventually leave.”
That’s exactly what God was nudging Valorie to do.
That day, He arrested her attention and spoke a word to her spirit that would ultimately lead her
on a path to purpose and prosperity.
“I had it all backwards,” Valorie reflects. “God was saying if you will just do what I called you to
do—this isn’t about money. Money won’t be an issue. You’ll never make more money than if you
do what I called you to do. And that was very clear. I had been fighting because I didn’t want to
give up my business and what felt secure to make a leap toward something that didn’t feel secure,
but that I felt passionately about.”
Valorie was stuck in a quandary.
Though it wasn’t an easy choice, months later, Valorie finally stepped out in faith and sold The
Burton Agency. This was a turning point in her life; her decision freed her to pursue her calling.
Today, Valorie is living her dream and helping others realize how possible it truly is.
Because of her obedience to the call of God, at 35 years old, Valorie Burton is an accomplished
Author, Life Coach, and Speaker. Organizations like American Airlines, Toyota, O, The Oprah
Magazine and Ohio University have hired her as a speaker.
She has also spoken at events for some of the nation’s largest churches, including: The Potter’s
House, Lakewood Church, and New Birth.
