Moms know children can be
wilfully defiant. They truly try
your patience and push serious
boundaries at times. But healthy
Christian parents who use
physical discipline, as long as
they don't abuse or strike in
anger, are in line with God's word.
Done right or not, everyone
doesn't view spanking favorably.
Ask Rosalina Gonzales, the mom
who was sentenced to five years
probation this past Friday and

classes, after admitting that she spanked her child. Corpus Christi's KZTV reports that although
Gonzales pleaded guilty to causing injury to a child, prosecutors said the woman used her hand and
did not leave bruises on the 2-year-old. Still, 214th District Court Judge Jose Longoria told the
mother this:
"You don't spank children today. In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a
different quarrel. You don't spank children. You understand?"
If spanking was good back in the olden days, why are so many trying to make it obsolete in modern
days? Interestingly, spanking is not illegal in Texas according to the Texas Attorney General's
website. It says, "Texas law allows the use of force, but not deadly force, against a child by the child's
parent, guardian, or other person who is acting in loco parentis."
There are plenty of African Americans who grew up in loving, healthy homes where spanking was the
norm. Many times, we endured that familiar “This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you” speech,
and took the beating. Today, we are wholesome adults with memories of stern discipline that left us
with sore back sides, but a healthy respect for right and wrong.
But with every debate, there are two sides. And when it comes to the spanking debate, not everyone,
whether Christian or non-Christian, agrees with physical discipline. Whatever your feelings about it,
there is plenty of support for it in the Holy Scriptures:
Proverbs 13:24: "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him
betimes (diligently)."
Proverbs 19:18: "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying."
Prov 22:15: "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far
from him."
Prov 23:13: "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall
not die."
Prov 23:14: "Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell (Shoel)."
Prov 29:15: "The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to
shame."
So, EEW Magazine editors want to know what you think? Is spanking cruel and usual? Should
parents employ spanking since it is found in the word of God? Legally, should parents be allowed to
discipline their children however they want to? Sound off at TableTalk@eewmagazine.com.
